What is Easter and why is it celebrated? | Newsround

Easter is the most important festival for Christians. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus — when Christians believe he came back to life three days after dying on the cross. The week before Easter is called Holy Week. It starts with Palm Sunday, when Jesus arrived in Jerusalem. Maundy Thursday remembers the Last Supper, his final meal with his friends. Good Friday marks the day he died. Then, on Easter Sunday, his followers found his tomb empty — Christians believe he had risen from the dead.

Easter eggs are used to celebrate this day because they symbolize new life, just like Jesus rising again.
